The Shetland Pony Grand National (SPGN) is a long‑established and highly respected equestrian display team, showcasing the skill, athleticism, and partnership of young jockeys and their registered Shetland ponies. For decades, the SPGN has travelled across the United Kingdom — and now internationally — delivering fast‑paced, engaging racing displays while raising significant funds for charity.
Each year, the SPGN proudly supports the Bob Champion Cancer Trust, with all funds raised contributing directly to vital cancer research. The Trust was founded by Bob Champion following his remarkable recovery from cancer and subsequent victory in the 1981 Grand National aboard Aldaniti. Since its formation, the Trust has raised over £16 million.
The SPGN is honoured to be part of that legacy. In 2025, our team raised over £51,000, bringing our cumulative contribution to the Trust to more than £300,000.
In recent years, the SPGN has expanded its presence beyond the UK, representing British equestrian sport on the global stage. Our international appearances include:
These invitations reflect the professionalism of our team and the growing international interest in the SPGN’s unique and dynamic display.
Throughout the season, all participating jockeys compete for one of ten coveted places at the prestigious London International Horse Show at ExCeL each December. This event is the highlight of the SPGN calendar and provides an exceptional platform for young riders to perform in front of a world‑class audience.
To ensure fairness, safety, and consistency across the series, all participants must meet the following criteria:
These standards uphold the integrity of the competition and maintain the traditional character of the Shetland Pony Grand National.
The SPGN has become a recognised stepping‑stone for young riders aspiring to careers in racing. Many former SPGN jockeys have progressed to professional success, including:
Our most distinguished alumnus is Jim Crowley, who went on to become Champion Flat Jockey in 2016.
A typical SPGN display lasts approximately 30 minutes and includes two heats and a final, offering spectators three thrilling races per session. Our displays are designed to be engaging, family‑friendly, and professionally delivered, making them a highlight at major events across the country and abroad.
